Alternative Therapies Used in Brooklyn Rehab Centers (Art, Music, Equine Therapy, and More)

Addiction treatment is not limited to group therapy and medication. In a program with recommended detox care, alternative therapies can help patients process stress, trauma, anxiety, and emotions that are hard to talk through directly. These therapies do not replace clinical treatment, but they can make the recovery process more complete.

What Are Alternative Therapies in Addiction Treatment?

Alternative therapies are structured treatments that use creative, physical, or sensory methods to support recovery. They may include art, music, yoga, Tai Chi, acupuncture, massage, and biofeedback. In some settings, they may also include equine therapy.

These therapies work alongside primary clinical care such as CBT, DBT, individual counseling, group therapy, and medication-assisted treatment. Their purpose is to give patients more than one way to regulate emotions, reduce stress, and stay engaged in treatment.

When these services are delivered by trained or certified professionals inside a licensed treatment program, they can be a meaningful part of care.

Art Therapy

Art therapy uses drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and other creative work to help patients express what may be difficult to say out loud. This can be especially helpful for people with trauma histories or people who struggle to put emotions into words.

At Urban Recovery, certified art therapy staff work with patients during the residential program. The facility includes an on-site art room designed for this part of the treatment.

Patients do not need to be artists. The goal is not to make something perfect. The goal is to use the creative process as part of recovery.

Music Therapy

Music therapy uses listening, writing, creating, or performing music in a structured therapeutic setting. It can help with emotional regulation, anxiety, mood, and self-awareness.

Urban Recovery has a dedicated music studio, and certified music therapy staff are part of the residential program. Sessions are built around treatment goals, not entertainment alone.

For some patients, music becomes a safer way to access feelings they may not be ready to discuss directly. That can make it an effective support alongside counseling and group work.

Yoga and Physical Movement

Yoga and Tai Chi are part of the wellness programming at Urban Recovery. Both use slow movement, breath control, and present-moment focus. These practices can help calm the nervous system during early recovery.

Detox and early residential treatment can leave the body feeling tense, restless, or reactive. Movement-based practices give patients a practical way to manage anxiety, cravings, and stress.

Fitness programming with a personal trainer is also available. This can help patients rebuild strength and physical confidence after a period of substance use.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used in addiction treatment settings for many years. Some programs use protocols designed to support relaxation, sleep, and withdrawal-related discomfort.

Urban Recovery offers acupuncture as part of its wellness integration. For patients dealing with anxiety, insomnia, or physical tension during detox, acupuncture can be one tool that helps make the early stage of treatment more manageable.

It is not used as a replacement for medical detox or medication when those are needed. It is used as part of a broader support plan.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can help address the physical tension that often builds during stress, withdrawal, and long-term substance use. Tight muscles, shallow breathing, and guarded posture can make it harder for patients to feel settled enough to participate in treatment.

At Urban Recovery, massage is available as part of the wellness program. The goal is not luxury. It is to help patients feel more physically grounded so they can engage more fully in the clinical work.

Physical comfort can matter in recovery. A patient who feels calmer in their body may have an easier time participating in therapy, groups, and daily structure.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback helps patients learn how to notice and regulate their body’s stress response. It may use real-time information such as heart rate, muscle tension, or skin response. Patients then practice breathing and relaxation techniques to shift those patterns.

This can be helpful for people who struggle with anxiety, cravings, or impulse control. Instead of only talking about stress, biofeedback lets patients see how their body responds and learn how to calm it.

For some people, that concrete feedback makes self-regulation easier to understand and practice.

What About Equine Therapy?

Equine therapy uses guided interaction with horses to support trust, emotional regulation, and self-awareness. It is usually offered in more rural or extended residential settings where horses and outdoor space are available.

Urban Recovery does not offer equine therapy on-site. Our facility is located in Brooklyn’s Red Hook Waterfront neighborhood, and our programming is designed around an urban clinical setting.

Patients who are specifically interested in equine-assisted therapy can discuss that during discharge planning. Referrals may be provided when it is clinically appropriate.

How Alternative Therapies Fit Into Our Clinical Model

At Urban Recovery, alternative and wellness therapies support a larger clinical program. Patients receive 35 hours of counseling per week, daily group therapy, individual counseling, medication-assisted treatment when appropriate, and integrated mental health care.

The foundation is clinical treatment. Art, music, movement, acupuncture, massage, and biofeedback add more ways for patients to connect with the recovery process.

Our purpose-built Brooklyn facility includes an art room, music studio, rooftop deck, fitness room, yoga and Pilates space, outdoor lounge, and meditation rooms. The setting is designed to support the work of recovery, not distract from it.
